Youth Activities Center
This multipurpose center provides food, education and athletics for homeless and abused children. The Center is the third project Bucher/Borges Group (BBG) has completed for this not-for-profit client and the building offers the children an inspiring refuge for many activities. The structure includes a kitchen, a cafeteria, classrooms, a gymnasium and offices. There are several specialty spaces, for example: a chapel and classrooms for music, dance and art. BBG provided complete architecture and engineering services, as well as extensive assistance obtaining permits for the new building.
The venue resembles an urban infill project but it is located in the suburbs of Washington, DC. Shoehorned between two existing buildings and a cell phone tower, the Center responds to its exterior environment. The front facade reflects the 1930′s Tudor style architecture of the campus while the rear is designed in a modern style. The building materials are sustainable and low maintenance, with particular attention given to resisting teenage enthusiasm.
